Douglas County School Board History and Background
The background on this goes back levels and is worthy of a blog or report all it's own. Right now the conversation has become centered on how power is used, not being transparent, and how quickly some are to go back on their word. Normally paired with a creative narrative that benefit them even if it divides and stresses a community.
For example this CPR article covers it best but after running on a kids first narrative (the four most recent, theoretically non-partisan, board members and slight majority) have given students 5 days or less time to respond to major changes, similar time to teachers and staff, and use biased justification for changes with statements to say "I do believe this reflects what the majority of the district wants" without any date or time given to confirm the assumption clearly being made.
The point we are at now is that legal language and staffing changes are being done behind the curtain in quick radical movement - even at odds to the majority of public comment, and 100% of student comment, and in face of hundreds of teachers and staff in the district taking a sick day to rally in opposition. These are also people who ran on the tag line kids first - a hypocrisy from the beginning but even so proven each week as they make decisions minimal time or attention given to students and the student advisory council.
We will continue to follow this story as local news coverage and help document what is being written or sent by others. My fear is that the spin of this will attack teachers, staff, and blow off youth opinion as indoctrination. My hope is that teachers, parents, and students not only here but around the US and World see that those who use fear, divisiveness, and manipulation to get there way can not be trusted or tolerated and embark in a process of political and community activation that helps stop future dividers from positions of power.
